Flagstone Patios and Walkways in Houston, Memorial and Katy
Set on a compacted gravel base, with joints that drain instead of heave.
We build flagstone patios, walkways and stepping paths in Memorial, Spring Branch, the Energy Corridor and Katy from $18 per square foot, set dry on a compacted crushed-stone base with gravel or decomposed granite in the joints. On an existing slab we set the stone in mortar from $24 per square foot. The base under the stone is most of the price, and it is what keeps a patio flat in Houston clay.

Gravel base or mortar: which one your yard needs
- Dry-laid on a gravel base
- Stone bedded on compacted crushed limestone and a leveling layer, joints filled with gravel or decomposed granite. Water drains through, the clay can move without cracking anything, and a stone that settles gets lifted and reset. Our default on soil.
- Mortar-set on a slab
- Stone set in a mortar bed over a sound concrete slab, joints grouted. Solid and without weeds, but the slab has to be sound and sloped: a cracked slab cracks the stone above it. Our choice for entries and covered patios.
- Stepping paths
- Single stones bedded in the lawn or a gravel strip, each leveled on its own base. The least expensive way to put flagstone in a yard.
- Oklahoma or Arizona stone
- Dense Oklahoma flagstone for most jobs; Arizona sandstone when you want a lighter color. About two inches thick for a dry set; thinner stone goes in mortar.
How we build a flagstone patio on a gravel base
01. Dig out and compact the clay
Six to eight inches deep, soft spots replaced, then the bare clay packed with a plate compactor.
02. Crushed-stone base
Four inches of crushed limestone in two compacted layers, sloped a quarter inch per foot away from the house, like our paver base.
03. Leveling layer
An inch of decomposed granite or coarse sand screeded flat, so each stone sits fully bedded, not rocking.
04. Set and cut the stone
Big pieces first, joints about an inch, edges cut with a saw so the pattern reads as a surface, not a puzzle.
05. Joints and edge
Gravel or decomposed granite tamped into the joints, plus a steel or stone edge where patio meets lawn so the border doesn't creep.
Flagstone and Houston clay
Clay swells when it rains and shrinks in August; a thin stone on bare dirt rocks within a year. A dry-set patio moves with the ground and keeps draining; mortar only works if the slab is sound. If your yard holds water after a storm, we regrade or add a shallow drain line first, priced separately.
What a flagstone patio needs from you
Every spring or two, sweep decomposed granite into joints that have settled, pull the odd weed by hand, and tell us if a stone rocks: we lift it, add base and reset it. Dense Oklahoma stone needs no sealer; sandstone takes a breathable one.

Flagstone questions we hear in Houston
01How much does a flagstone patio cost in Houston?
From $18 per square foot dry-laid on a compacted gravel base, and from $24 per square foot set in mortar on a slab, with the base and the cutting included. Thick Oklahoma stone and tight joints cost more than thin stone and wide gravel joints. Send a photo and the size and we'll quote both ways.
02Gravel base or mortar: which one lasts longer in Houston?
On soil, the gravel base. It drains, flexes with the clay, and any stone that settles is lifted and reset in an hour. Mortar lasts as long as the slab under it: on a good slab it's the cleaner finish without weeds; on a slab that has already cracked, the stone cracks with it.
03Will weeds grow between the stones?
Some, in gravel joints. Decomposed granite packed tight and a fabric under the base keep it to a few a season, and we pull them by hand, nothing sprayed. If you want zero weeds and the patio sits on a sound slab, mortar joints are the answer; on soil, the gravel joints are what keep the patio flat.
04Can you set flagstone on my existing concrete patio?
Yes, in mortar, if the slab is solid and drains away from the house. We clean it, check it for cracks and slope, set the stone in a mortar bed and grout the joints. A slab that holds water or has heaved gets fixed or replaced first, and we tell you which on the visit, before you decide.
05How long does a flagstone patio take?
A 300 square foot patio on a gravel base takes about three days: one to dig out and compact, one to set the stone, one to cut, joint and edge. Mortar work adds a day for curing. You get the schedule in writing with the quote, and the dig-out doesn't start until the stone is on site.
06Do you also do the beds and lawn around the new patio?
Yes. Most patios end with a new bed line, fresh mulch and a strip of sod where the dig-out tore up the lawn. We quote that on the same visit so the patio looks finished the week it's done, and the same crew comes back for the yard instead of a second contractor.
