No oak pruning from February through June
tfsweb.tamu.eduTexas A&M Forest Service asks that oaks not be pruned or wounded from February through June, when the beetles that carry oak wilt are most active. So we schedule oak work in Katy from July to January, and we paint every oak cut right away, any time of year. Crape myrtles, pecans and most ornamental trees don't have that restriction; we prune them in late winter while they're dormant.

Hurricane prep, August to November
The cuts that protect a house in a storm aren't dramatic ones. We raise low limbs off the roof and gutters, take out dead and crossing branches that snap first, and thin a dense canopy so it doesn't catch the wind like a sail. We do it in August or September, before storm watches start, and take no more than a quarter of the live canopy at once so the tree stays healthy.
What each cut is for
- Lift low limbs
- Lower limbs come off (a crown raise) so the roof, driveway and sidewalk are clear and you can park, walk and mow underneath.
- Dead branches
- Dead, dying and broken branches come out of the canopy. They fall first in a storm, and they're where decay starts.
- Clear the roof
- We cut limbs back from the house, fence and neighbor's roof at the branch collar, never topping a tree or leaving stubs.
- Thin the crown
- We take out crossing and inward-growing branches so light reaches the lawn and wind passes through the crown.
Safety and cleanup
We lower limbs with ropes into a clear drop zone, never onto a roof or fence. Smaller trees get ladders and pole saws; mature ones get climbed. When we leave, the branches are hauled off, the lawn raked and the driveway blown clean. If something in your yard gets damaged, we fix it before we invoice.

Tree trimming questions we hear in Katy
01When should I trim the live oak in my front yard?
July through January. Texas A&M Forest Service asks that oaks not be pruned or wounded from February through June, because that's when the beetles that spread oak wilt are active. For hurricane prep, August or September works well: the canopy gets thinned before storm season peaks and the cuts have time to seal.
02How much of the tree can you take off at once?
No more than a quarter of the live canopy in one season. Taking more stresses the tree, triggers weak sprouts and weakens the branches that are left. If a tree needs a lot of work, we split it over two seasons and tell you the plan up front, with the second visit priced on the same quote.
03Do you top trees to make them shorter?
No. Topping leaves stubs that rot and sprout weak shoots that break in the next storm. If a tree is too tall for its spot, we shorten specific limbs back to a side branch that can take over, which keeps the tree's shape and strength. Sometimes the honest answer is that it's the wrong tree for that spot.
04Can you cut back the neighbor's branches that hang over my yard?
We cut the limbs hanging over your yard back to a proper branch collar on your side of the property line, never in a way that hurts the tree, and we suggest talking to your neighbor first. Anything on their side of the fence needs their OK, and we're happy to quote both yards on one visit.
05What happens to the branches?
They leave with us the same visit. We cut big limbs to length and load them, chip or bag the small stuff, and rake and blow the lawn before we go. If you'd like firewood or mulch left behind, tell us on the visit and we'll stack it wherever you want.
06Can you take down a tree that has to go?
No, we only trim and prune. When a tree is dead, leaning or too close to the house to save, we'll tell you straight and refer you to a crew with the right equipment. In Memorial Villages, we'll also tell you which permit applies. Afterward, we take care of the yard.
